Only seven stores in the UK have been chosen to stock the Golf SB range and we are the only Scottish store to have this honour. Wednesday 3rd May is the date at our Glasgow store and if you want to come along for some golf ball whacking just phone 0141 548 8777 or e-mail shinybaws@focuspocus.co.uk for your invite.

are you kidding me? Have you read the Naomi Kline book "no logo?"
they are swish (swoosh?) but you are accepting the lack of ethics of a bunch of careless corporate locusts. Skateboarding is about more than the logo, and what the hell does it have to do with golf anyway? Maybe the "veteran skater" owners (cough cough) can justify this?

What's golf got to do with skateboarding? Not much really, culturally and ideologically they're miles apart.
But Nike happens to be a large sportswear company, a number of skateboarders, including some top pros, happen to play golf and before you get too wound up.... it's actually just a bit of fun, we're not expecting skateboarders to suddenly start wearing golf attire.

You're opinion is valid and we respect it but you don't have to buy it, no skateboarders will be harmed by it and wether you like it or not the arrival of Nike on the UK skateboarding scene has allowed some of the better skate shops to survive.
Of course skateboarding is bigger than the logo, but get real mate, skateboarding is no different than any other industry/business in so much as money makes it's wheels go round.
Anyway rant over, we've done the decent thing and not deleted your post so hit us back on your ethical computer powered by the socialist Microsoft Corporation.

P.S By the way what footwear brand are you wearing?

P.P.S "Veteran skaters" thanks for the compliment.

it's only skateboarding mate get over it...Can you get your own opinion instead of Naomi Kline's afterall isn't she brainwashing you like Nike supposedly are other skaters...You're right golf does suck "a waste of a good walk" to paraphrase Wilde (yes you're not the only person who reads) but what is skating without fun?

As far as I am aware Nike SB only sell to skater owned shops and most of these shops in the UK have chosen to stock it. With skateboarding as it is right now, this allows skate shops to subsidise hardware sales, which I'm pretty sure make very little money for them, with the money that crazy "sneaker heads" spend on every new Nike release. If this is what it takes to keep skate shops open in our cities I'm all for it. Personally I'm not down for giving money to some faceless company over the internet. Oh yeah, as was previously said, it all looks like a bit of fun.

fact is, I agree that NIke is a very bad company to buy from. Behind all the glitz, flash designs and saturation marketing, the reality is gritty for those who make the things. Certain skate companies, who have been in the business for a while are no better, but companies such as globe and DVS buy from much better sources. Skaters, look to your responsibilities as consumers, and forget what people tell you is cool to wear. Do your research.

check out http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/sweatshops/nike/stillwaiting.html for starters.

"the arrival of Nike on the UK skateboarding scene has allowed some of the better skate shops to survive" i dont think so. Having worked in a few myself, i see that with the general practice of 100%mark up and the growing numbers of skaters, the shops can do well without buying brands that force workers to perform in inhumane conditions. In short, that´s bullshit...skateshops decide what to buy, and are not about to go out of business if they stand up and send Nike a message concerning their poor working conditions and unjustifiably huge profit margins. Look beyond the shrink-to-fit world you surround yourself with, Stop stocking them, and watch skateboard shops survive regardless.

Bit condescending to suggest that skaters only buy what they're told to and if you think that skateshops are surviving regardless then what about Sumo, Four Down, North 57 etc?

It's an emotive subject for sure but I would say that like most mega corporations they have done/do bad and good things. I found this link about Nikes sinful and charitable actions.

Put's a slightly more balanced perspective on it I think.

Well, if you have worked in a few skate shops yourself, please let us know what products are 100% mark up? Hardware? I don't think so buddy. Growing numbers of skaters? I don't think so. Your either behind the times or you plain don't skate.

Your argument for better working conditions- sure I agree, but to say that DVS and Globe are any better than Nike is complete bullshit. Look inside every skate shoe's tounge and look at where they are made. Try Vans for starters.

If your not down for Nike, then go look at Route One's website. If you want to try and support local shops, well do so, but accept that they might sell some things you might not like!

Shut up and skate.

i´ve been skating fair trade skate shoes for the ´7 of the 10 years i have been on a board. I don´t know about globe, but its a fact that DVS (see transworld industry website) have been committed to a fairer price for workers for 4 years now. Nike are, and have always been interested in image rather than action, and have repeatedly broken their promises to significantly better working conditions whilst racking up huge profits. its a question of principles, and we all have a choice. Spouting things like "shut up and skate" is just avoiding a true discussion. There are 2 sides to this story, but in my opinion, buy conscientously; skateboarding is a positive thing, so reward companies who make it positive right down the line to the folks in Malaysia and Taiwan. Its not hard!

"skateshops decide what to buy, and are not about to go out of business" They may decide what to buy but it doesn't stop them going out of business. That my friend is actual bullshit.

Ok, this is getting pretty heated ( and interesting).
However the post was about a night we are holding on the 3rd of May.
Yes we stock Nike, but we also stock DVS.
Let's call it quits.

Business is business, I'll keep my nose out of yours if you keep yours out of mine if you don't like it.

Enjoy the night. EVERYBODY is welcome.
